Dubai- Israel’s ground invasion of the Gaza Strip will be delayed to give the United States the chance to transfer additional air defence systems into the Middle East, The Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday.
The Pentagon is rushing to deploy roughly a dozen air defense systems to protect troops in Iraq, Syria, Kuwait, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates from missile fire.
Concerned Israeli officials have agreed to delay an expected ground invasion of the Gaza Strip until the air defence systems are set up as early as later this week.
Unnamed US officials told the newspaper that the US expects its troops and bases to be attacked by several groups in the region when the ground invasion ensues.
Iran-backed groups known as “Resistance Axis” have carried out at least 13 attacks since the outbreak of the Gaza war, injuring at least two dozen troops in Syria in one attack and 10 US soldiers in Iraq in another attack.
The US has been a major backer of the Israeli war on Gaza, providing the Israeli regime with the diplomatic, logistical, and military cover to carry out ferocious bombing on Gaza.
Washington has provided unprecedented support following Hamas’s devastating onslaught, sending two carrier groups to the eastern Mediterranean, as well as military advisers.
Biden administration is also reportedly concerned that Israel lacks achievable military goals for its operations in Gaza, leading US officials to believe that the IDF is not yet ready for a ground incursion.
Earlier on Wednesday, the US Embassy in Kuwait issued a security alert confirming threats against US military bases in Kuwait, which were posted on X.
The embassy’s statement read that it was “aware of threats made on social media by Alwiyat al-Waad al-Haq, a militia group in Iraq, against US military bases in Kuwait.”
It added, “As a result, the US Embassy in Kuwait is limiting its activity on US military bases to essential and official events only,” adding that US citizens are advised to “remain alert”.
This comes after the Alwiyat al-Waad al-Haq (True Promise Brigades) who identify themselves as the “sons of the Arabian Peninsula” affirmed that “patience has limits in the face of what we are witnessing today against the Palestinian people,” declaring that the group considers US bases in Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates “legitimate targets”.
Another factor considered by the Israeli war cabinet is said to be taking this opportunity to retrieve some of the captives held by the Palestinian fighters in Gaza in exchange for humanitarian aid, which it has blocked off more than 2 million people for more than two weeks.
