SRINAGAR– J&K senior men’s football team was sent packing from the 77th Santosh Trophy after winning one game and suffering three losses in their 2023 campaign played at Goa.
J&K lost 2-1 to Goa on Sunday. Adnan Ayub scored a captain’s goal to bring Zahid Shafi Mir-coached team to 1-1, but the hosts got the winning goal in 78th minute to knock J&K out of the tournament.
Earlier, J&K lost their opening match to Gujarat 2-1. Adnan Ayub was on the score sheet for J&K in this game as well.
J&K defeated Chhattisgarh 1-0 in the second match, a highlight of the team’s performance in the tournament. Raja Musharaf scored the lone goal of the game, as J&K held on to their slender lead.
High off their win, J&K was put in place by Santosh Trophy powerhouse Kerala. The 6-1 drubbing would have been an eye-opener for the young J&K team. Faisal Maqsood Thakur scored for J&K.
With the 2023 Santosh trophy over for the J&K, the senior men’s football team must reflect on the overall performances and the changes needed to help the region succeed at the national level.
