SRINAGAR: The Makhdoom Sahib ropeway, which was inaugurated less than two years back amid much fanfare, is defunct since May 17 this year as the inspection report has found defective components used in the machinery.
Also due to the non- functioning of the ropeway, state government is losing more than Rs 1.25 lakh every month.
General Manager Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation, Badrul Jalal admitted the technical snag in the machinery, saying the explanation has been sought from the Company which designed the ropeway at the shrine of Makhdoom Sahib (RA). The cable car first of its kind in the city was inaugurated in December 2013.
Jalal said that an inspection was carried out on May 1st this year and defective components were found in the ropeway. Later, the project had to be closed down due to the risk involved in its continuity. The ropeway is under warranty and the concerned company has been asked to rectify the wrongs at an earliest. We are expecting its resumption within three weeks from now on, Jalal said.
Meanwhile, sources said that the cost incurred upon the cable car project at Makhdoom Sahib (RA) was whooping Rs 10 Crore. So far the revenue collected out of the project has not gone beyond Rs 25 lakh. Surprisingly, the amount of revenue was spent to clear the electricity dues charged by the PDD for providing power supply to the project.
Sources within the Corporation said that it was not surprising to witness the ropeway turning defunct as the same was supplied by the Indian firm while as the Gulmarg ropeway has been manufactured by the French company.
Also, the inspection report about the Makhdoom Sahib ropeway has revealed that ropes and towers are unsafe and could endanger the human lives with its spare parts being of inferior quality.
Also, reports informed that at the time of the inauguration of the project, no clearance was sought from the environment management committee.
The GM Cable Car admitted the reports saying that there was no clearance sought from the environmental management committee and that the project was launched without the committees nod. KNS
