SRINAGAR– In a significant recognition of his contributions to the field of cardiology, globally recognized Kashmiri-American Cardiologist, Dr Fayaz Shawl has been awarded the title of ‘Top Interventional Cardiologist of 2023’ by the Washingtonian Magazine.
This prestigious accolade reaffirms his status as a leading figure in the world of interventional cardiology, celebrated for his expertise and pioneering achievements.
Dr Shawl currently holds the position of Director of Interventional Cardiology at Adventist Healthcare White Oak Medical Center in Maryland. His career has been marked by groundbreaking medical advancements and a commitment to improving cardiac care on a global scale.
Dr Shawl’s journey in the medical field commenced with the attainment of his medical degree from Government Medical College in Srinagar. Following this, he pursued his residency in England, honing his skills and knowledge. In 1977, he embarked on a transformative chapter in his career by relocating to the United States.
A defining moment in the annals of interventional cardiology occurred in 1981 when Dr Shawl performed the first-ever Coronary Angioplasty in the United States Military. This groundbreaking achievement took place at the renowned Walter Reed Army Medical Center and encompassed the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Dr. Shawl’s mastery of this innovative procedure was acquired during his training in Switzerland under the mentorship of Dr Andeas Gruentzig, the visionary pioneer behind coronary angioplasty.
Dr Shawl’s influence extends far beyond the operating room. He is a globally sought-after lecturer, sharing his profound knowledge on various facets of Interventional Cardiology with audiences worldwide. Notably, he has been a pioneering force in the development of the percutaneous approach, known as the ‘Shawl Technique,’ for cardiopulmonary bypass support (CPS). In 1988, he marked another historic milestone by performing the world’s first percutaneous bypass-supported high-risk coronary intervention at Washington Adventist Hospital.
His contributions to the field of cardiology are not confined to surgical prowess alone. Dr. Shawl is a prolific author with over 150 peer-reviewed articles, abstracts, editorials, and book chapters to his name. His book, “Supported Complex and High-Risk Coronary Angioplasty,” serves as a testament to his dedication to advancing the field.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr Shawl’s commitment to humanitarian efforts shines brightly. Through the Fayaz Shawl Philanthropic Foundation, he extends vital cardiac care to overseas patients in Dubai and Kashmir who lack the financial means to access medical treatment.
Dr Shawl’s illustrious career has been marked by numerous accolades and affiliations, including Fellowship status in esteemed institutions such as the American College of Cardiology, American College of Chest Physicians, American College of Physicians, American College of Angiology, and the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions. His accolades include the dedication of the “Fayaz Shawl Advanced Interventional Catheterization Laboratory” at Adventist Hospital and the Innovators Award from the Alliance of Cardiovascular Professionals of the USA.
Additionally, he has received honors from the American Heart Association, Best Teacher Awards, and recognition awards from the Maryland State Senate and the United States Congress. Dr Shawl has been named International Health Professional of the Year and is a perennial presence on the Washingtonian Top Cardiologists list.
His expertise spans high-risk coronary interventions, Transcatheter Aortic Valve replacement, MitraClip procedures, Carotid stenting, complex cardiovascular diseases, and their preventive measures.
