DEAR EDITOR,
It has been said that it is better tobe unborn than untaught. Educationbrings an overall improvement in thepersonality of an individual. Educationis the means through which one canachieve his objectives and contributepositively towards his society.Education plays an important role inmoulding ones behaviour and isconsidered to be of prime importancein the development of a country. It is considered to be the mostpowerful weapon which can be used tochange the world. Imparting propereducation is a key role of our educa-tional institutes. But when same are used for political purpose then whatmeaning would these educationalinstitutes render?Kashmir University being a premiereducational institute has achieved asuperior position and commendablerespect from all corners of the society. The contributions made by its studentsstand witness to the quality educationthat is being provided to them. But therecent spate of activities has divertedthe attention of its students fromacademics to mundane political issues. The most recent one being the visitof Mr. Rahul Gandhi which according tomost of the students was aimed atcreating a political base for his party.
Kashmir university ground has beenturned into a field for political battlebetween the mainstream politicalparties with some top Universityofficials actively participating in it. IfMr. Gandhi was really concerned aboutthe youth of Kashmir and wanted toresolve their problems, he should havechosen a a proper venue where youthfrom all sections could have joined.A select group of students wereallowed to interact with him. Why?Why were the questions relating to thepolitical issues not allowed to ask? Why the students were briefed beforehandnot to ask or say remotely anti India? The students were of the opinion that the university authorities were merepuppets of New Delhi and the StateGovt with less or no concern for them. They even staged demonstrations andstressed that the authorities cannotmuzzle their voice. For them any kind ofeconomic package was not worth thelives that had been lost in the past 20years. In addition to all such claims theyeven said that the Indian govt hasfailed to address the issue of Kashmirand now they were trying to trap themby offering jobs.
