Srinagar- In a first-of-its-kind innovation in the history of Jammu & Kashmir, two tallest Alm-e-Sharief have been hoisted along Foreshore Road at Shalimar area in the city on Tuesday.
Aga Syed Abid Hussain, a prominent Shia leader, in presence of whom Alam-e-Sharief was hoisted two such Alms were hoisted on the busy foreshore road.
“The size of the first is 62 feet and the second was almost 72 feet tall,” Aga said, adding that both flags have been made by locals of the area in order to show their respect and love for Imam Hussain (AS).
It took us almost a day to install the flags as the boulevard is always busy with traffic, he said, adding that the height of ‘Alm’ was very much tall and we installed it in almost a day.
The locals of the area have been installing the flags there for a long time, but this time, they planned to install two big flags. The Alm-e-Sharief is unglued from the site soon after the month of Muharram and some days of Safar, Hussain added.
Likewise, the locals and others associated with Muharram preparations have installed many other banners and hoods on the side of the Dal Lake and foreshore road.
Young Calligrapher From Srinagar Prepares Muharram Banners
A calligraphy artist from Alamgari Bazar Srinagar is busy preparing banners in connection with the ongoing holy month of Muharram-ul-Haram.
Shujat Ali Gazi said, “This way, I contribute to the Muharram preparations. I write specifically for Muharram purposes and have painted my first flag when I was studying in Class 6”
Gazi is a self-taught artist and his family is associated with the paper machie work. “So, it was easy for me to mix up colors. After all, it is a God-given gift,” he said.
Apart from banner painting, I also write Islamic calligraphy, Shujat said. “I have been with this art for more than 30 years and have learned from the basics to the top—the alphabet, and how to write in calligraphy. I have also taken inspiration from Irani calligraphy.”
Gazi said he sends banners across Kashmir, adding, “Recently, I sent flags and other calligraphy items to Uttar Pradesh.”
