Srinagar- The Union Territory Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha administered the oath of office to the newly appointed State Election Commissioner (SEC) Braj Raj Sharma here on Thursday.
Sharma was sworn in as the SEC for the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir at a ceremony held Thursday at the Raj Bhawan. He made and subscribed to the oath of office before the LG.
Sharma was last week appointed the SEC. He will hold the position of SEC till the age of 65.
The post of the SEC fell vacant on February 1, 2023 after K K Sharma completed his term.
A 1984 batch IAS (retired) officer of Jammu and Kashmir cadre, Sharma served as the chief secretary in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir before proceeding on deputation to the central government. Sharma served as Chief Secretary of J-K from 2015 to 2017.
In October 2019, two months after Jammu and Kashmir’s semi-autonomous status was revoked, the government appointed Sharma as the chairman of the Staff Selection Commission (SSC). He was re-employed by the Centre for two years after his superannuation on April 30, 2020.
A 1984-batch IAS officer hailing from Kathua district of the Jammu region, B R Sharma has served as the chief secretary of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir from 2015 to 2017.
He has also served as Additional Secretary in the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), as well as the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Jammu and Kashmir.
