New Delhi – While appreciating Panchayat elections held in the state in peaceful atmosphere with huge participation of the public, Union Health Minister Gulam Nabi Azad Saturday said it was unfortunate that the block level elections have been announced without any reservation for SC, ST and women.
In a statement issued here he asserted that the block-level elections to Panchayat Raj System is futile and meaningless without “reservation” to women and SCs. Azad further said tha the elections exercise of blocks in Panchayat Raj will be futile unless depressed class of society -Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Women folk are not represented at the Block and district levels in Panchayat raj system in Jammu and Kashmir. Jammu and Kashmir government had announced Block level elections in the state and issued notification on October 10. Taking a dig on the state government government, he said “these elections would be meaningless unless there is reservation in Panchayat Raj system”.
