PULWAMA: After few odd rifle snatching incidents and the reports about the youth joining militant ranks, police and other security agencies have begun nabing suspects during nocturnal raids in different hamlets of South Kashmirs Pulwama district.
Residents from Kakapora, Lelhar, Naman, Sambora, Badibagh, Parigam, Warwan, Wanpora and other hamlets say that from past one week, police and other security agencies have been continuously conducting nocturnal raids to arrest the suspected youth. During nocturnal raids in Kakapora and Lelhar, police accompanied by SOG and CRPF personnel arrested Jahangir Ahmed Shah and Azad Ahmed Bhat and shifted them to some unknown destination. We dont know why they were arrested as both the youth have no affiliation with any militant organization, said a group of people.
We appeal to the state government to put a stop on the nocturnal raids as such raids are the source of chaos and agitation, the people said.
A police official on condition of anonymity said that there are reports that many youth have joined the militant ranks and it may these youth who try to snatch service rifles from security men. We have reports that militants have deficient supply of arms and ammunitions. To compensate this deficiency and to arm their new recruits, these militants have started to snatch rifles from the security personnel, he said.
In two days, two service rifles were taken away by the suspected militants from the policemen. On Monday, the driver of the BJP leader took away the service rifle PSO Manzoor Ahmed in Prucho Pulwama while on the next day in the same distrct, suspected militants snatched rifle from head constable Mahir Maqsood. Both these policemen have been taken into custody for questioning. Earlier, a policeman from the same district, guarding a Minister disappeared after taking away two service rifles from Sheikbagh area of Srinagar city. Militant outfit Hizbul Mujhadeen later claimed that policeman responsible for the act has joined their outfit.
Meanwhile, after the rifle snatching incident at District Hospital Pulwama, the security in the district has been beefed up and on Wednesday pedestrians were frisked and public and private vehicles were thoroughly checked at different check points at Gangoo, Dalipora, Rajpora Road, resulting in massive traffic jam.
