Srinagar- Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha on Saturday expressed optimism that the upcoming G20 meeting in this capital city will give a big boost to the tourism sector besides bringing in more investments to the Union Territory.
The high-profile event, beginning May 22 in Srinagar, Sinha said, would showcase Kashmir’s rich culture and hospitality on a global scale. The LG also hailed the support of locals to the administration for making preparations for the 3rd G20 working group meeting scheduled next week.
“I hope we will organize the event together and that its grand success will encourage tourism in the days to come, bring about more investment to the region, and at the same time showcase Kashmir’s rich culture and hospitality on a global scale,” Sinha told the media after inaugurating Jhelum Riverfront side here on Saturday morning.
He also expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for providing J&K an opportunity to hostG20 meeting in J&K.
Regarding the ongoing Smart City projects in Srinagar, the LG while congratulating the executing agency for completing Jhelum left Riverfront side said it is an international level space created by SSCL having amenities like free Wi-Fi zones for children, cycle tracks and pathways.
“Jhelum Rajbagh riverfront is a model of urban excellence and it will enhance the quality of life of the citizens, contribute to socio-economic growth and provide much needed support in developing cultural & business infrastructure. It is also a strong indicator of the rapid growth of J&K,” he said.
“Srinagar city evolved and flourished around the water bodies, which contributed to the prosperity of society, local economy and the culture. However, due to neglect and degradation over the period of time, the restoration of this priceless heritage was the need of the hour and I am sure it will contribute to living standards of people and boost the local economy,” he added.
He said the work on the right Riverfront side will be started soon, while a library will also be set up in days to come.
“I congratulate the people of Srinagar and Kashmir as work on Jhelum left Riverfront side was completed. Srinagar was converted into a backyard but the work done by Srinagar Smart City Ltd is worth praising. Srinagar is being developed as a world-class city and its makeover will not only boost the economy of the region but also preserve its cultural heritage,” the LG added.
We are developing smart infrastructure that will preserve the cultural heritage and also unlock the huge untapped potential of the river, he added.
According to an official spokesperson, Jhelum Riverfront has been envisaged as a continuous walking and cycling promenade along with parks, and public plazas equipped with public amenities like sanitation, seating spaces, and high-quality lighting.
