PULWAMA: In a rare incident, unknown persons on Tuesday entered a police post in the premises of District Hospital in Pulwama town and escaped with a rifle after providing misleading information to cops, official sources said this evening.
They said at around 5:45 two persons appeared outside the post. The post comprises of two rooms and normally five policemen are posted there for duty.
One of the persons told a policeman that an altercation is going on between some persons in the hospital casualty and the policeman were required to be there. The policeman informed his colleague and both went to check the situation. Before leaving, the cop placed his Insas Rifle in a trunk inside his room, they said adding it appeared to be a ploy by the suspects.
While cops were away, the duo opened the lock of the room probably with a duplicate key and also unlocked the trunk in which the rifle was kept,they said.
These sources said the duo escaped with the rifle before cops could return. Sources said the rifle belonged to Mahir Maqsood Dar (belt number 1348/DL) of Rambagh, Srinagar. A magazine has also been taken away, they said.
Soon after the incident, large contingents of police and paramilitary personal arrived on the spot and conducted searches including of private vehicles.
Meanwhile, top sources said that all the five policemen have been called by Special Operation Group (SOG) for questioning. Sources disclosed that Maqsood Dar has been detained by the SOG and questioning was on Tuesday evening.
This is the second incident of weapon snatching in Pulwama district within the span of two days.
On Sunday evening, driver of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader escaped along with the weapon of latter’s security guard.
Meanwhile, a top police official said that the rifle snatching incidents are likely to increase in future as many youths have joined the ranks of militants in south Kashmir. (GNS)
