Tourism casual staff lock office entrance gate

Srinagar:  Up in arms against the non-payment of salaries from last one year, the Tourism casual laborers Monday locked the main entrance of Directors office as a mark of protest against the authority’s ‘ineffectual’ approach and set the effigy of Director Tourism on fire.

Shouting slogans against the Director Tourism, hundreds of laborers under the banner of Tourism casual Laborers Union (TCLU) assembled on main road and locked the main entrance of the office alleging step motherly treatment by the government.

The protesters also threatened to go for a protracted hunger strike with their families in case their legitimate demands were not met.

“The government has left no other option for us other than to come on the road along with our families. We have now decided to go for a protracted hunger strike if our genuine demands are not met. From last one year, not a single penny has been given to us though we work round the clock. Not a single officer dared to enter into Directorate Tourism Office after floods but we people worked day and night to clean every room from the filth and yet we were not given salary,” Sarwar Ahmed, President TCLU told CNS.

“We have struggled hard during these months and after our hard efforts the Minister in charge told us to continue our services but we don’t know as to why Director tourism is acting as a hurdle and is not ready to provide us our salaries,” said spokesperson of the Association Muhammad Asif.

When contacted, Director Tourism Farooq Ahmed Shah told CNS that he is making every effort to release salaries in favour of these labours. “I have forwarded their cases and am on job to get their salaries released,” he said.
