Rs.7.27 lakh fine imposed for VAT violations
Jammu: The Commercial Taxes Department (CTD) has foiled yet another major attempts of tax evasion at Commercial Taxes Checkpost Lowermunda in Jammu and seized a bulk quantity of banned polythene from a truck and also imposed fine of Rs.7.27 lakhs on drivers and incharge of vehicles for violations of J&K VAT Act.
Commercial Taxes Officer, Checkpost Lowermunda, Abdul Hamid Ganai told CNS that two vehicles JK05C/2838 and JK03B/1922 when intercepted at this Checkpost after Toll clearance, they were put under routine thorough physical check under the supervision of Inspectors Majaz Afzal and Mir Zubair and after a thorough physical inspection excess goods were found in the trucks which were without any documents or declarations.
We have deducted 29 boxes of Chines Nails and Hardware items from truck (JK05C/2838) which were kept hidden under the rice bags by driver very cleverly. The market value of the goods was over Rs four lakhs and action under section 67(5),67(10) and 67(9)a of J&K VAT Act has been taken against the driver and owner of goods and penalty to the tune of Rs.424880 was imposed and recovered on spot and vehicle along with goods was released after payment of Tax in the form of penalty. Similarly from vehicle (JK03B/1922) polythene and polythene carry bags 240 bags about 5500 Kgs (55 Quantials) were found excess in quantity and without any document and driver of vehicle has kept these polythene bags under the Motor Spare parts &Tea bags, Ganai said.
He said the vehicle along with goods was seized vide seizure memo number 243/LM-CT and proceedings under various sections of J7K VAT Act has been taken against the driver/ incharge of vehicle and owner of goods and penalty to the tune of Rs.302400 was recovered from the defaulter driver for violations of VAT Act. He said the seized polythene along with truck is being handed over to the J&K State Pollution Control Board, Srinagar for confiscation proceedings under rules. Ganai said that the Commercial Taxes Department has handed over 450 quantials of banned Polythene & Polythene Carry bags along with vehicles to State Pollution Control Board Srinagar from last 20 months in compliance to directions of Division Bench of Hon’ble High Court of J&K and same was seized in different vehicles from time to time at Commercial Taxes Checkpost Lowermunda.
Ganai further said that every effort is being made at this Ckeckpost to stop the illegal import of Polythene in to the Valley and warned drivers that whosoever will attempt to import the polythene they will be dealt with iron hands.
