Srinagar- Controversial Pakistani-Canadian journalist Tarek Fatah passed away on Monday after a prolonged battle with Cancer, his daughter Natasha Fatah shared the news.
Fatah, who hogged attention for his incisive comments against Islamic radicalism and Pakistan, would highlight his Indian origins and claim that he came from a Rajput family that was forcibly converted to Islam. He was 73.
Fatah found a receptive audience in India after 2014 for his broadsides, laced with sarcasm, against Pakistanis.
Fatah endeared himself to many here by describing himself as an “Indian born in Pakistan, a Punjabi born in Islam, an immigrant in Canada with a Muslim consciousness”.
Born in Karachi, Fatah who worked as a reporter, columnist, and radio and television commentator, emigrated to Canada in 1987 and was a regular face on Indian television.
Meanwhile, the RSS condoled the demise of Fatah and said his significant contributions to the media as well as the literary world will be greatly remembered.
In a condolence message posted on Twitter, RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale said Fatah was an eminent thinker, author and commentator.
“His significant contributions to the media and the literary world will be greatly remembered. He remained committed to his principles and beliefs throughout his life and was respected for his courage and conviction,” Dattatreya said.
“My thoughts go with his family, friends, and admirers who will be hugely missing him,” the RSS leader said, adding, “I express my deepest condolences on his passing away and pray for the ‘sadgati’ of the departed soul.”
