AS Eid-ul-Fitr arrives, it brings with it a sense of spiritual fulfilment and joy for the faithful who have observed a holy month of fasting and worship. For many in Kashmir, this joy is accompanied by the remembrance of those who have been lost due to the turmoil that has plagued the region for the past quarter of a century. This year, unlike the previous year, the situation on the ground is even more normal. The past more than a year have seen tourist and business activity pick up, which has provided some relief to the economy. However, the economy is still reeling from the successive lockdowns from 2019 to 2021 and needs normalcy to sustain for a longer period of time to recover fully.
In the run-up to Eid, there is often a shopping frenzy, with consumerism taking over. However, it is important to remember the poor and the people who have suffered the most over the past three decades. It is our obligation as a community to celebrate Eid while also contributing in a meaningful way to lessen their misery.
Eid in Kashmir is more than just an occasion for joy and celebration. It is a time for reflection, mourning, and remembrance. The festival is about spiritual renewal and a sense of fulfilment, and it provides an opportunity for individual and collective reflection.
As we celebrate Eid, we must also remember the thousands who have died in recent decades. We must reflect on the turmoil that has plagued the region and the impact it has had on the lives of ordinary people. We must remember our obligation towards our society and work towards creating a better future for all. Let us remember the values of compassion, empathy, and generosity that lie at the heart of the festival.
Furthermore, as we reflect on the past and present, we must also look towards the future with hope and optimism. Despite the challenges that we face, we must remember that we have the power to make a difference. Whether it is through small acts of kindness towards those in need, or larger efforts to bring about positive change in our communities, we can all play a part in building a better world. Let us use this Eid as an opportunity to renew our commitment to these values.
