SRINAGAR- A day after electing its new office-bearers, Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industries (KCCI) Thursday urged the administration to hold the decision of imposing property tax, given the desperate economic condition of Jammu and Kashmir.
The newly elected president of Kashmir Inc, Javaid Tenga said Jammu and Kashmir received back to back jolts in terms of economy over the past few years and that the people here are not in a position to pay taxes.
“I think this is not the appropriate time to impose property tax in J&K,” Tenga said during his maiden interaction with selected media here.“Let the government put the decision on hold for a few years.”
Given JK’s desperate economic condition, he added, people can’t pay taxes.“First 2014 deluge and then subsequent events that unfolded in J&K crushed its economy.”
The government should reconsider its decision for the larger interest of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, he said.
“The lockdown imposed in the aftermath of the COVID-19 broke the back of the economy,” Tenga added. “And therefore, we urge the administration to reconsider its decision.”
Regarding the future strategy of the newly elected body, Tenga said the biz body will focus on sub sectors including tourism, handicrafts and general trade.
“Everyone knows where business in J&K is heading at the moment,” the KCCI president said.“Business community has suffered a lot over the years and we will strive to bring it out of the dilemma.”
