The New Delhi: Narendra Modi government at the Centre on Wednesday assured Jammu Kashmir government about declaring Mughal road as an alternate national highway between Jammu and Valley.
The request will be considered after a formal reference is made by the state government to the Ministry of Road Transport, said a state government spokesperson quoting Union Minister for Road Transport and Highway Nitin Gadkari. This followed request from State Chief Minister Mufti Sayeed to declare Mughal Road as an alternate national highway until the completion of four lanning of the existing Jammu-Srinagar national highway.
Raking up the issue of frequent closure of Jammu-Srinagar national highway due to bad weather conditions in the last couple of months, the Chief Minister also discussed with him the matter regarding delay in finalization of contract for four lanning of NH-1A between Ramban to Banihal which is in an extremely bad shape. He also raised the issue of the slow pace of work on Srinagar-Qazigund expressway saying that it was creating a lot of inconvenience to the people.
He also emphasized on making arrangements to ensure regular maintenance of the NH-1A as it is bypassing major towns like Nagrota, Udhampur, Batote, Qazigund, Bijbhara and Pampore.
Assuring to speed up the process of allotment of contract, the National Highway Authority of India said that it will review the arrangement with the contractor and inform the state about all aspects of its maintenance within three weeks.
