Srinagar- At least two students were injured in a group clash at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University in Katra, prompting the authorities to suspend classes at the varsity for two consecutive days.
Clashes erupted after an argument between local and non-local students during a football match turned ugly on Wednesday night, an official from the University told Kashmir Observer. He said the clashes were reported on Thursday as well, after which the university administration suspended classes for Friday and Saturday.
“The university will open on Monday. However in order to avoid any further clashes, the university has decided to close for two days,” said the official.
He further said an inquiry has been ordered by the authorities which will investigate the incident.
“Strict action will be taken against the erring students. The police have been informed as well” he added.
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) spokesperson, Mohit Bhan blamed the students from Bihar for the violence.
In a video he posted on Twitter, Bhan said that the city of temples was fast turning into “Gang Land Of Bihar”
“The lawlessness by the “Outsiders” has entered our institutions in Jammu. Students from Bihar studying in SMVDU Jammu are threatening and beating the local students of Jammu. Once City of Temples is fast turning into “Gang Land Of Bihar” & now the universities are being shut,” Bhan posted on his Twitter handle.
However, Superintendent of Police (SP), Katra, Amit Bhasin told Kashmir Observer that the situation at the campus was under control.
No FIR has been lodged against any student. It was a minor issue which has been resolved. Everything is normal now,” he added.
