Srinagar- Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday hit streets in Srinagar against the ongoing anti-encroachment drive, alleging that the drive was meant to render poor masses in Jammu and Kashmir ‘homeless’.
According to reports, dozens of PDP workers tried to take out a rally from the party headquarters on Tuesday afternoon against the ongoing eviction drive launched by the Union Territory administration to reclaim the illegally occupied state and Kahcharai land.
Carrying placards which read “stop bulldozing our houses”, “stop ruling J&K as a colony” and “Kashmir is for Kashmiris”, the PDP workers demanded immediate halt to what they termed ‘selective drive’. The protesters tried to march towards Lal Chowk. However, the cops deployed in advance prevented them from moving ahead.
The angry protesters said that PDP will move to the Supreme Court in case the drive launched against poor people was not stopped forthwith.
Meanwhile, a similar protest was staged by the workers and activists of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) at Press Enclave against the ‘alleged’ onslaught on the poor.
Protesters alleged that the ongoing drive has created chaos and confusion everywhere in J&K and that the government should revoke the arbitrary order forthwith, failing which protests will be intensified in the entire Union Territory.
“Who has given you the rights to bulldoze the poor? On one hand the government says the poor will not be touched, while on the other hand uphill efforts are made to render them homeless. How could the government let people shiver in this bone chilling winter,” AAP activists told media persons.
