Srinagar- After a few hours of rain in Srinagar, roads in and around Lal Chowk which are going through renovation turned muddy and slippery.
Commuters, especially two wheelers, had a tough time riding through the slippery road in the heart of the city on Wednesday.
A video which went viral on social media shows female commuters falling from a scooty. As a passerby tries to help the falling duo, he too falls on the road.
People thronging the commercial hub of Lal Chowk have voiced their displeasure over the dilapidated condition of the roads.
“I was standing on the footpath of the Residency road, At least twenty motorists fell on the road due to the slippery road. If Authorities want to carry out developmental works, they ought to take proper precautions.” said Kifayat Hussain Mir, a bystander.
“If people falling on the roads are hit by a vehicle from behind, it can cost them their life.” Kifayat added.
The commuters urged the LG Administration to take note of the situation and take measures in order to avert a tragedy.
Pertinently, roads in and around Lal Chowk have been dug for various development projects by the Srinagar Smart City (SSC). However, in absence of macadamization the roads are muddy and slippery.
Speaking to a local media outlet, a biker who fell off the bike said he was riding at a very slow speed.
“Despite the fact I was riding very slowly, my bike skidded because mud was all over the road. Even before me, many people have fallen here. Look at the condition of my clothes, is this what the Smart City is meant to be” he questioned.
Netizens also reacted sharply to the incident and urged authorities to get to the rescue of people.
“Srinagar is being destroyed in the name of Smart City” commented Nazir Ahmad on the viral video.
However, some people had suggestions for the Administration.
“Salt should be sprinkled all over the Residency in order to make it feasible for commuters but the government does not care” wrote Zubair Ahmad on the social networking site Facebook.
Kashmir Observer tried to get in touch with the authorities in order to raise the burning issue. However, SMC Commissioner & CEO Smart City (SSC) Athar Aamir did not respond to repeated phone calls.
As the Meteorological Department has predicted Snow in plains and upper reaches of Kashmir, the condition of the dilapidated roads in the city is set to get worse.
