Put Four Conditions, Including Statehood; Safeguards Under 6th Schedule To Meet Any Empowered Committee
Srinagar- Days after Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) set up a high-powered committee to discuss measures to ensure protection of land and jobs for the people of Ladakh, two major representative bodies of the region on Saturday laid four conditions for meeting any panel empowered to discuss issues, including statehood for the UT and constitutional safeguard under the sixth schedule of the constitution.
The Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), two major conglomerates of political, social and religious organisations on Saturday held an emergency meeting at Jammu and unanimously decided not to accept the formation of the high- powered committee and not to attend any meeting conducted under the aegis of the committee, saying it has not been mandated to discuss issues raised by the two bodies, reads a joint statement issued to Kashmir Observer.
However, the statement said that the meeting resolved that both the bodies will agree to participate in any meeting headed by a committee which is empowered to discuss the four issues in question, including statehood for UT Ladakh, Constitutional Safeguard under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India , formation of Public Service Commission and Reservation of Jobs for youth of Ladakh, besides creation of two separate parliamentary constituencies for Leh and Kargil.
“The meeting further strongly objected to the composition of members of the High-Powered Committee representing Leh APEX Body and KDA as the government has arbitrarily excluded and included members without consultation with the APEX Body and the KDA,” the handout reads.
The two bodies, as per the statement, also resolved in the meeting that the agitation for the resolution of the four issues shall continue till our genuine demands are fulfilled.
“In this connection, the APEX and KDA propose to have a protest rally at Jammu on the 15thof January followed by Dharna Protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on 3rd week of February 2023. It may also be clarified that both the bodies have decided to intensify the agitation during 2023,” it said.
