Baghdad- The President of Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council issued an arrest warrant for former U.S. President Donald Trump for assasination of anti-terror commander General Qassem Soleimani, according to Baghdad Today.
In a statement issued by Faiq Zaidan Iraqi judiciary issued an arrest warrant for former U.S. President, who confessed to having committed the crime, calling on those investigating the assassination of the Quds Force commander, Qasem Soleimani, and chief of staff of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) in Iraq, Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, to make an exceptional effort to uncover the perpetrators, Baghdad Today reported.
“Why has he not yet been held accountable for this heinous crime?” Zaidan asked, referring to Donald Trump.
The U.S. army carried out a military operation in which Soleimani was assassinated near Baghdad International Airport on January 3, 2020.
Earlier the Iranian authorities issued summons to 73 people involved in the assassination of the iconic Iranian commander.
“A court notice has been issued against 73 people involved in the murder of martyr Soleimani,” Judiciary Spokesman Masoud Setayeshi said on Tuesday as quoted by news agency IRNA.
Soleimani, the commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards’ elite Quds Force, was killed by a US drone strike in Baghdad on January 3, 2020.
The operation, in which Al-Muhandis was also assassinated, led to an escalation of tension between the US and Iran.
Meanwhile Iraqi leaders and officials on Thursday reiterated condemnations of the killing of Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis in a US strike in Baghdad three years prior, during a forum commemorating the anniversary of the assassination.
Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani called the killing “a flagrant violation” of Iraq’s sovereignty, adding that the repercussions could have threatened the stability of the region. The Iraqi premier said that the blood of “martyred leaders must not go in vain.”
President Abdul Latif Rashid also condemned the US assassination, saying that their targeting is a blow to all “moral, legal and political regulations.”
“The targeting must remain a subject of denunciation and rejection, and be a priority for Iraqi political dealings until justice is achieved,” said the Iraqi President.
