BHUBANESWAR- The 2023 FIH Hockey Men’s World Cup is set to begin in Odisha from January 13. The state government of Odisha will host the 15th edition of the Hockey World Cup at Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela and the iconic Kalinga Hockey Stadium in Bhubaneswar. The competition is set to end on January 29.
Odisha has already hosted FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup in 2021 and the FIH Hockey Men’s World Cup in 2018, sponsored by government of Odisha itself.
Now the officials are primed and ready to ensure a smooth-running and fairly contested tournament. Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey said that hosting Men’s World Cup at Bhubaneswar-Rourkela is a huge honour and “we cannot wait to welcome the world’s top hockey players to India.
“All the preparations for the tournament are on track and we are very excited to organize the biggest hockey tournament,” he said.
Secretary, Department of Sports & Youth Services R Vineel Krishna said Bhubaneswar and Rourkela will witness the high-octane action between the world’s best sides.
Odisha is all set to rise in sports in coming years and necessary modern amenities are on anvil, the Secratary said. “Under Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s guidance, the state has created enviable sports facilities. Around 100 multipurpose indoor stadiums have been constructed in urban areas with facilities of gym, badminton, table tennis and other sports like Poll volt, khokho, Rugby, Yoga Asana and others activities to attract talent pools,” he added.
A total of 21 Astroturf fields are under construction in the blocks of Sundargarh district including Rourkela and would be completed before the Hockey World Cup. The district is known as the cradle of Indian hockey.
It is for the first time in the history of hockey, that a world cup would be played at two places, Bhubaneswar and Rourkela.
A total of 16 teams from five confederations will compete at the tournament.
