SRINAGAR– At least seven members of a family were feared killed Friday after their house was hit by a landslide in Doda district while two persons were buried alive when a landslide hit a forest area in Uri.
According to reports a mudslide triggered by incessant rains buried a residential house along with inmates at village Dawalkund in Doda.
The house of Jodh Ram, a resident of Diwalkund in Dessa belt of the district, collapsed today because of heavy rains in the area, Senior Superintendent of Police (Doda) Javed Naseeb Manhas said.
Manhas said over phone that the bodies of the persons which are buried beneath the debris have so far not been recovered and it is feared that entire family has been wiped out.
Despite being a remote and inaccessible area a police team managed to reach there.
“So far we have not been able to pull out any survivor or the body from mud and debris of the house,” he said.
Meanwhile two persons died when a landslide hit a forest area in Uri in Baramulla district. They were identified as Mohammad Dilawar Mir and Abdul Jabbar War.
The duo had gone to forest to collect mushrooms when they came under a landslide, officials said.
On Monday, 16 people were killed in a similar incident at village Laden of Budgam district of the region.
Rescuers pulled out 15 bodies from the debris. However, search for the missing one member was still going on.
Hundreds of people fled their homes earlier this week in the wake of incessant rains causing water-logging in localities, and pushing up water level in rivers and water bodies.
Authorities issued flood alerts asking people to move to safer places.
Last year, devastating floods hit the region killing 300 people and leaving thousands more homeless.
The loss to property and infrastructure due to floods was estimated around 16 billion U.S. dollars in the region and killed 300 people.
