Flood Fears Subside
SRINAGAR: The State government on Thursday said there was no flood in the Valley and all the rivers were flowing below the danger mark as it invited tourists saying Kashmir will be much greener this year after the rains.
Senior minister Naeem Akhtar told reporters that the flood threat has been averted and all the rivers at present are flowing below the danger mark.
There is no flood. There was some panic among the people because of the last years situation. But right now all the rivers are running much below the danger-level and there is normal activity across the State. There may be some rains tonight but afterwards the weather forecast is quite normal. The worst phase has passed, Akhtar said.
He added that the administration was on tenterhooks and alert as part of the routine governance. We admit that there were problems of water-logging in some areas but the government was doing its best to dewater such areas.
There is water-logging in some areas. This season is generally rainy here and these problems remain in the months of March and April. We are mechanically trying to dewater those areas where there is water-logging. But there is no danger. We are using pumps to dewater such areas, Akhtar remarked.
Claiming that the government would strive to avert the floods in valley, he said it would start a drive to remove illegal constructions near water-bodies to allow free passage of water.
We will start from those areas where water flow has been obstructed. The district administrations have been instructed to remove such obstructions The illegal constructions near the bunds which render them weak will be removed everywhere, he said.
