Srinagar: Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) Tuesday expressed serious concern over the flood situation and grief over loss of lives in the valley due to incessant rains.
In a statement President DAK Dr Nisar ul Hassan said they have set up round the clock helpline numbers for medical help to public. People can call on following phone numbers: 09469154840, 09697988866, 09796337171 and 09906832097.
Dr Hassan said that during floods there is a threat of emergence of water borne diseases like cholera, typhoid, leptospirosis and hepatitis. Well water may become contaminated and household water may be unsafe to drink during floods. In order to prevent epidemic of these water borne diseases people should bring water to rolling boil for one minute or add chlorine to water and leave it for 30 minutes before drinking. Hand washing with soap and water before eating and after using toilet will prevent spread of disease during floods, he said.
Open wounds and sores should be covered with adhesive bandage while in contact with floodwaters. No specific vaccinations are recommended for flood events.
Individuals exposed to flood waters who have not had tetanus booster shot in ten years should receive a tetanus booster, he added.
The DAK has constituted teams of doctors who will be available for medical camps in case hospitals are flooded. Voluntary organizations and pharma companies are requested to coordinate with DAK so that medical relief to public is efficient and rationale, Dr Hassan said and assured people of the valley of every possible medical help in this testing time.
