Castigates Center over delay in relief package to flood hit people
SRINAGAR: The former chief minister and NC working president Omar Abdullah Monday alleged that the Government of India preferred polls over the relief activities in the flood ravaged Jammu and Kashmir and delayed the flood package without any reason.
Omar while talking to reporters outside the Assembly in Jammu said, Instead of playing politics over the flood situation in Jammu and Kashmir, everyone must work to save precious lives and provide some relief to the flood hot people.
Omar said he doesnt want to play politics over the present threat of floods which looms large across valley as it has been just seven months after that Kashmir valley had to witness the similar situation of September last year.
The former chief minister also castigated the measures taken by the state government saying he would like to ask what steps has the government taken to save people from natures fury at present. He said the facts must be made public that what measures have so far been taken by the GoI for saving people from the flood situation.
Omar maintained that at the time when there was a dire need for the relief activities in Jammu and Kashmir after it was struck by the worst ever floods, GoI preferred conducting elections over providing relief to the victims whose everything was snatched by the ravaging waters in September last year.
“We (JK govt.) had told them (GoI) to first take care of rehabilitation of the flood-hit people but they went ahead with the elections first that affected the rehabilitation work,” Omar claimed.
However, Omar hoped that the situation will improve as weather seems no more worse like that of the September last year.
Accusing government over keeping the people of valley in dark over the latest situation and the measures taken up by the administration to tackle the crises, Omar said people are getting information from internet and not from government about the present situation of floods in valley.
He said that the government needs to remain on tenterhooks so that any situation that would endanger peoples lives could be avoided. The former CM suggested that the government should utilize the services of the former officers who have discharged their duties during last years floods and they would help the government to move in a right direction.
Omar also said that the delay in the approval of the relief package of 44 thousand cores submitted by state government to GoI has also made flood victims to suffer and ignored the need to put their lives back on gear.
