Srinagar: Accusing College authorities of being harsh towards them, the students of SSM College of Engineering and Technology Srinagar Saturday once again during a protest march here said they are forced to pay extra fee to complete their semesters.
The SSM B-Tech college students from Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics and Computers who assembled in media hub said that there are clear-cut directions from Kashmir University to the said college to collect Rs 37,800 per year from each student but to their surprise and shock, the college has been demanding Rs 75,000 per year from each student.
The students alleged that College authorities are looting the students and in the name of education, the head of College wants to fill her coffers.
The students displayed the Kashmir University Circular duly signed by Assistant Registrar Academic. The circular reads, it is notified for information of all the concerned that in absence of the instructions of the government to the contrary, the Vice Chancellor has authorized that the tuition fee of Rs 37,500 as prescribed for B.Tech/B.E course be charged from those students also as are admitted to the same courses under lateral entry mode.
This is injustice towards us. Where from we can arrange such a heft amount. The government and University must make the college authorities accountable so that they cannot loot us, protesting students told CNS and sought the intervention of Higher Education Minister.
The students said that why the SSM College is not following the circular of Kashmir University. It is irony that SSM College authorities charge us on the pattern of outside state college. We fail to understand why Vice Chairperson Dil Afroza Qazi has taking her college at par with outside colleges while the fact is that SSM colleges lacks infrastructure facilities in toto, they siad adding that it is affiliated with Kashmir University and still it is violating all norms of the University.
Dean Colleges, Kashmir University Muhammad Mustafa Shah that the matter has been resolved during a meeting yesterday. We called the SSM College authorities and they agreed to revert their decision. Now the students have to pay only Rs 37,800 pa, he said and added that in case of any complaint, any student can contact him.
