Jammu- Eight passengers, four among them women, were killed Wednesday when a cab skidded off the road and fell into a gorge in Kishtwar district, a senior officer said.
Deputy Commissioner, Kishtwar, Devansh Yadav said preliminary information has suggested that eight people were travelling in the private cab and all of them died in the accident.
“Bodies of eight persons have been recovered, but the rescue operation is still on,” he said.
The deceased have been identified as cab driver Umer Gani, Mohammad Amin, Mohammad Irfan, Afaq Ahmed, Safoora Bano, Muzamula Bano, Asia Bano and Mohsina Bano.
This was third major accident on Doda Kishtwar roads in last one week in which 16 people including Superintending Engineer, Executive Engineer, Assistant Executive Engineers (AEE) and the driver were killed.
On November 14, four employees of the Roads and Building department died in an accident in the Doda district when the government vehicle skidded off the road and fell into a 200 meters deep gorge near Assar on Batote-Kishtwar National Highway.
On November 8, four young boys had drowned after their car skidded off the road and plunged into the fast flowing water body near Karara Premnagar in Doda district.
Meanwhile, Jammu And Kashmir Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha and several mainstream politicians have expressed grief over the loss of lives in the tragic accident.
“Anguished to learn about the loss of lives in a road accident in Kishtwar. My deepest condolences to bereaved families. Directed district administration to provide all necessary assistance,” LG Sinha Tweeted.
Former Chief Minister J&K and Chairman of Democratic Azad Party also expressed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.
In a condolence message, Azad said “May almighty give enough strength and courage to the bereaved families to bear such irreparable loss. I once again expect that authorities will ensure enough safety measures as occurrence of such accidents are witnessed every alternate day,” he said.
“Smooth traffic movement on such hilly terrain needs immediate attention. I am sure that adequate compensation and immediate relief will be provided to the next kin of those who got killed in this devastating accident,” he added.
Apni Party President Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari also expressed grief and sorrow over the causalities in the road accident.
“I am deeply saddened to hear about the tragic accident that took the as many as eight human lives. My heart goes out to the families of the deceased,” Bukhari said.
He added, “In this hour of grief, I stand in solidarity with the families of the deceased and I prey to Almighty Allah to give them enough strength to bear the pain of this irreparable and inconsolable loss and rest the departed souls in eternal peace.” (With agency inputs)
