Srinagar – Jammu and Kashmir government today said water supply to several areas of Srinagar has been restored to a large extent but water supply system in Uri has completely collapsed.
The restoration of water supply in the state’s summer capital was possible following repair of trunk water pipes feeding the city at boulevard, royal springs and dal bund damaged by the earthquake yesterday, Public Health Engineering Minister Qazi Mohammad Afzal told reporters here.
Repair of the damaged drinking water system has been taken up on an war footing and supply restored to a large extent in the city, he said.
He said the repair of both service reservoirs of Nishat as well as reservoirs of Hazratbal and Tulsibagh, which had developed cracks due to the quake, was on in full swing.
However, he said full restoration work would take another two-four days but the people would not be made to suffer and tanker service has been made in affected areas.
Giving details of other districts including Budgam, Baramulla and Sopore town, Qazi said resewrvoirs at a few places developed minor cracks but no major damage has been caused to water supply barring a few.
Major area of concern is Uri sector where water supply is totally defunct and six tankers have been pressed into service to provide clean drinking water to the residents there.
He said full labour force as well as public health engineers officers have been stationed in Uri sector to supervise adeqauate water supply.
The minister said one over-head tank had collapsed at Watrigam in Sopore along with three such tanks at other places. Similarly, water supply in Chundoosa and Shallakote in Rafiabad has been disrupted and restoration work is in progress.
Qazi said there was little communication with officials at Tangdhar, Gurez and Karnah in Kupwara district.
The minister said no reports of major damage has been received from the south areas of Kashmir valley which include Bijbehara, Anantnag, Shopian, Pulwama and Tral.
The water supply stands restored in these areas, however, disruption if any is expected to be restored soon.
