Focus on back yard poultry, grassland dev, grading up local cattle, improving farm efficiency, technology transfer
JAMMU: The State Level Executive Committee (SLEC) for implementation of the National Livestock Mission (NLM), Wednesday approved the proposed Livestock and Grassland Development Action Plan 2014-15, of Rs 16.95 Cr.
Headed by Chief Secretary, Iqbal Khandey, the Committee in its 1st meeting here, reviewed the impact and outcome of various livestock and poultry development schemes under implementation in the state besides holding discussions on steps to be followed towards achieving self sufficiency in Animal & Sheep Husbandry sectors.
Under the Mission, State Government seeks quantitative and qualitative improvement in livestock production including poultry and milk yield, addressing the problems of scarcity of animal feed resources, skill development of farmers and Para-vets, technology transfer and extension.
Popularize backyard rearing of the poultry birds to decrease dependence on import of poultry products including poultry meat and table eggs, establishment of small poultry units for selling the produce in local market, besides upgrading farm efficiency viz. farming, feed milling and hatching operation, development of infrastructure, conservation and development of native breeds and research are some of the other activities to be focussed under the Mission.
