KULGAM: The death of a pregnant woman at Sub-District Hospital Kulgam sparked off protests by her family members and attendants, who accused doctors of grave negligence.
There were dramatic scenes outside SD Hospital Kulgam after the family members of Rahila Banoo (26), who died in hospital after giving birth to a baby on Tuesday morning, held a protest and ransacked the hospital equipments.
Eyewitnesses told CNS that the agitated family members and attendants smashed the windowpanes, broke the the furniture of Medical Superintendent and caused heavy damage to the hospital lab. The protesters were pacified by the officials of district administration including Additional Development Commissioner Muhammad Ahsan who rushed to the spot along with police party shorty after the incident.
These doctors killed my wife. Dr Rafiq Darzi did her surgery few days before and after that never attended her, the husband of the deceased woman informed police and district officials adding that despite developing pain, the doctors did not bother to attend her and did not even advised us to shift her to Srinagar hospital.
The protesters demanded immediate suspension of the erring doctors while ADC Kulgam ordered magisterial probe into the incident.
Suspension is not the solution of the problem. We are contemplating to terminate the erring doctors. I have ordered a time-bound probe and I assure you all that negligent doctors will not be spared, ADC Kulgam Muhammad Ahsan told CNS adding that he has directed police to registered a formal case in this regard.
When contacted, Medical Superintendent SDH Kulgam, Dr Muhammad Shafi Darzi refuted the charges that the woman died due to the negligence of the doctors. The woman developed restlesness due to scissory infection and before we could have shifted her to Srinagar hospital, she breathed her last, he said.
