Srinagar: Express concern and regret over the callous attitude of government towards providing relief and rehabilitation of the flood victims, the Hurriyat Conference (M) said that the succour to victims was deliberately being subjected to administrative delay by the authorities and the culture of nepotism was being promoted keeping in tradition of the past alive.
The government departments were involved in large scale bungling of money meant for the relief and rehabilitation of flood victims, adding, the victims were suffering for the want of essentials and shelter but nobody was paying any heed to their constant requests. Time and again claims of government that it was providing help to flood victims were proven to be hollow as the victims are being forced to pay hefty bribes to government officials to get small monetary compensations in return, a spokesman of the amalgam said in a statement..
He said the business was severely hit by the September 7 floods in Srinagar last year. Neither the government has announced any comprehensive package to bring the economy back on track, neither the bureaucrats, officers, are departments have done anything to address the problems of business community, the spokesman said, adding, the traditional policy of delay and making simple thing complex while granting compensations for the business fraternity by the administrative machinery continues.
Hurriyat spokesman said that no transparent mechanism was established by the government to address the problems of flood victims, adding, the insurance companies too were making excuses to the business men so as to pay the damage money.
He said that large scale nepotism, corruption and bribery has been witnessed in government departments while granting help to the flood victims, adding, many people who were not entitled for the compensation were given money after they paid bribe to the government officials.
The spokesman said that at many places, people lost passport documents which were being processed in various government departments. He said instead of providing help to them, the government was making it sure to make things difficult for them.
He said it was highly unfortunate that government instead of providing help, its various departments were victimizing the flood victims.
