ISLAMABAD: Chinas Foreign Minister Wang Yi opened its largest overseas diplomatic mission in Pakistan, which Mr. Yi termed as a symbol of friendship between the “all weather” allies.
State-run China Daily quoted Wang as saying: China’s largest overseas embassy, it is a symbol of friendship between China and Pakistan.
According to local media reports, Yi’s two-day visit to Pakistan is seen as a preparation for the upcoming visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping, according to reports.
“Wang Yi said President Xi Jinping will make a state visit to Pakistan at the ea
rliest possible date this year,” a statement posted on the Foreign Ministry’s website.
“This will be President Xi Jinping’s first visit to Pakistan as head of state,” Wang said.
Since taking office in 2013, Xi has pushed the idea of a Silk Road Economic Belt that would connect China to South Asia and Central Asia with roads, railways, ports and airports.
The new Islamabad embassy, of which no further details were provided, comes at a time when Beijing and Islamabad deepen their all weather relations with the construction of the multi-billion Economic Corridor through the Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK).
The Economic Corridor, which is part of the Silk Road projects proposed by President Xi aims to connect China’s Xinjiang with Pakistan Gwadar Port in Balochistan province neighbouring Iran.
Beijing is also preparing to construct two 1,100 MW nuclear reactors with $6.5 billion in addition to the four medium size reactors.
President Xi cancelled an earlier trip to Pakistan due to the political turmoil the country was faced with.
