SRINAGAR: The cross-LOC trade between divided parts of Kashmir resumed on Thursday after five days of suspension following recovery of drugs from a truck of Pakistan-controlled Kashmir (PcK) last week at Uri in north Kashmir, officials said today.
The officials said after successful dialogue between Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, Talat Parvez and DG Trade and Travel Authority of PCK, Brig (retd.) Imtiyaz Ahmad, the trucks on the either side of Line of Control (LoC) returned to their respective destinations.
Brigadier Imtiyaz contacted DC Baramulla over phone since we cant call from this side and he told him that he has spoken to his government and they have approved the resumption of trade, officials said, adding: at around 11:30, we sent stranded PcK trucks from this side and our 50 truck also came back from the other side.
Today, we our15 loaded trucks from our side went there but no truck came from PcK side because they had no consignments at their terminal. They had informed us about this yesterday, the Sub-District Magistrate (SDM) Uri, Showkat Ahmad Rather said, adding: from tomorrow, the trucks would cross from both the sides.
Official sources disclosed that the authorities here shared evidence as well as photographs with the PcK officials in order to make them believe that the drugs were seized.
Basically, what happened last year is Pakistan authorities thought that we had planted the drugs but when we showed them evidence that time, they believed us. This time, they were quite serious and they wanted us to share the evidence so that they could also probe the matter, sources said.
The SDM Uri, meanwhile, said the driver is in police custody and if he is proven innocent in court, he will be released. He further said: We want the trade should go one. But, we wont allow anyone to trade those things which are harmful to the society, adding: we are vigilant.
Pertinently, police have arrested three local traders in connection with the recovery of 12 kilogram brown sugar from orange boxes last week on Saturday. Police are probing the matter.
