Police says Nazir died after escaping from custody
SRINAGAR: People took to streets Wednesday in Kupwara against the death of a man allegedly in police custody.
According to the protesters the youth Nazir Ahmad Mughal of Zirhama was arrested by police a few days back in connection with a murder case. Today morning Nazir was brought dead to the Sub-District hospital Kupwara, they said, alleging that he was killed in custody.
A senior doctor at the Hospital said over phone that Nazir was brought dead in the morning.
Giving details doctor said that Nazir was brought to the hospital first yesterday (Tuesday) evening at around 7:00 pm by the police for treatment. After giving him injections and other medicines, we advised an X-Ray, ECG and other tests for analyses. However, policemen accompanying him took him away without bringing him back, he said, adding that this morning the youth was brought dead to the hospital by the policemen.
Senior Superintendent of Police Kupwara, Rahul Malik told reporters that on February 10 Nazir son of Abdul Rehman adopted son of Bahadur Khan aged 32 years of Gujjar Pati, Zirhama, Kupwara was arrested in connection with the murder Case under FIR No 76/2014 U/S 364/302 RPC of P/S Trehgam. The man was called by police post Zirhama for questioning in connection with the murder case. Yesterday he complained abdomen pain and was immediately taken to hospital for treatment. Nazir later fled from the hospital on the excuse of attending the natures call in the hospital, the SSP said adding instantly the search was conducted to trace him out and this morning his body was found near the compound wall of District Hospital.
Magisterial Inquest proceedings have been initiated as per law strictly as per NHRC guidelines. We have also taken cognizance of the death and initially we have suspended the policemen including an officer who had accompanied the man to hospital, Malik said, adding that further investigations have been launched to ascertain the truth behind Nazirs death.
MLA CONDEMNS ‘CUSTODIAL KILLING’
Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Conference has condemned the alleged custodial death of Nazir Ahmad Mughal of Zirhama Kupwara.
MLA elect Kupwara, Bashir Ahmad Dar while condemning the custodial death of Nazir Ahmad Mughal said that there is no space for such incidents. He demanded a judicial probe into the killing of Nazir Ahmad Mughal. He urged the senior officials to take strong action against errant officers and take serious notice of these kinds of incidents and take strong action to stop such incidents taking place in future, a statement issued here read.
He added that such inhumane incidents create fear in the hearts and minds of people and vitiate the peaceful atmosphere. He expressed sympathy with the family of the deceased.
