Anantnag: In first of its kind in South Kashmir, doctors at the Kokernag hospital operated upon a 35-year-old patient and removed three kilogram cyst from her ovary.
According to the medicos, the patient kulsuma Akhter w/o Gh Hassan Bhat of Larnoo village here visited the hospital for consultation regarding her deteriorating health. The patient was not taking the food properly from the last two to three years as her stomach was pushed up and liver had shrunk, the medicos told Kashmir Observer. Due to the pressure,which had developed on both the kidneys as well as on the bladder, she was suffering from frequent urination too, they said.
The patient belonged to a poor family and was taking the matter casually despite the fact that the symptoms had started developing from the last four years, said BMO Dr. Mohammad Yousuf Zagoo , a surgeon specialist who operated upon her.
Dr Zagoo said the investigation of the patients revealed the left ovarian mass lesion (cystic) 3kg size and on exploration intra-abdominal lesion suspected mysentic cyst, a rare entity of this size was found. He said the surgery was very complicated and involved lot of risk as the nutritional status of the patient was very poor and the haemoglobin was as low as seven grams. The patient as well as the attendants were very cooperative and we were able to take a calculated risk, said Dr Zagoo.
Though, there have been few cases elsewhere also, but it is the first case of its kind which has been detected and successfully removed in this area, he said , adding the cyst of this size is also very rare.
The patient after undergoing a two hour long surgery, according to the doctors, was recovering well.
