Srinagar – Minister of State for Home and Revenue, . Nasir Aslam Wani today informed the Legislative Assembly that Pantha Chowk is one of the most important road junction in the valley and the Chowk has been widened to a considerable extent from either side i.e. towards Pampore as well as towards Srinagar to ease the traffic management on the National Highway.
In view of the huge increase in vehicular population and non-availability of an alternate road, a proposal for construction of overhead foot bridge (pedestrian crossing) at Pantha Chowk for the convenience of the general public is under active consideration of the government. This will help to overcome the problems of the general public besides contributing in proper traffic management and smooth flow of traffic and reduction of accidents.
He said government will take appropriate steps to regulation of traffic at HMT crossing which is known to be the gateway for the vehicular traffic coming from North Kashmir. He said this route witnesses frequent movement of Army / SFs convoys besides, movement of people to the tourism destination at Gulmarg adding that the regulation of traffic in the area involves coordinated efforts of the traffic department and allied departments including Transport, SMC/JMC, SDA and JDA. The traffic police with the active cooperation of allied departments has been making all out efforts to manage the traffic smoothly. The traffic police has enhanced the regulation system and has resorted to both permanent and temporary regulatory measures which include diversions and restrictions, depending upon the nature and volume of traffic to different destinations. He said surprise and random checks are being carried out by the special squads to maintain strict vigil on each route and vulnerable areas to serve as deterrent for the violators.
He said as many as 3,36, 260 violators have been challaned during the year 2011 and a fine (compound money) of Rs. 8,91,84,58/- has been realized from them. Similarly, 2,00,430 violators have been challaned and a fine of Rs. 6,07,78,513/- realized from them during the year 2012 upto August, 2012, he added. The other actions include prompt action against illegal parking by pressing into service the cranes for lifting the vehicles which are un-authorizedly parked on the road sides. Hydraulic wrecker with under lift arrangements fitted on 207 type vehicles etc in the twin cities of Jammu / Srinagar has been hired to deal with the menace of wrong parking.
The entry of heavy vehicles into cities of Srinagar and Jammu, during peak hours pursuant to the orders of the High Court (7 am to 9 pm during summer and 8 am to 8 pm during winter has also been banned).
Installation of delineators, traffic cones and road dividers on various roads of twin cities has been introduced to enforce lane driving and inculcate sense of discipline among the motorists.
