Kashmir was considered land of saints and sages. There are number of Sufi saints who visited Kashmir from distant lands in order to achieve spiritual heights. These Sufis were experiencing extreme bliss in this beautiful piece of land. The snow laden mountains, greenery of cedar trees, dancing rivers and serenity of lakes were carrying spiritual message for them. May be this was the reason for these Sufis to get attract towards our land. The other obvious reason was they came here to spread the message of Islam. It was because of their hard efforts people of Kashmir are following religion of Islam. Sufis like Syed Sharafudin Musawi alias Bulbul Shah (R.A), Mir Syed Ali Hamdani (R.A), Syed Ali Aali Balkhi (R.A), and Mir Shamusdin Araki (R.A) and many more enriched Kashmir and played great role to transfer Islamic values among Kashmiri masses. But unfortunately in present time moral and spiritual values are fading away.
There are several reasons for the fall of moral and ethical values in our society. The first and far most reason is we are copying West and their life style blindly. Undoubtly West has made progress in the field of different sciences but they have become spiritually barren. It is for this reason their families are disintegrated, divorce rate and crime rate against women is high. Another reason for the degeneration of moral and spiritual values is misusing of scientific inventions like television, mobile phones, internet and nuclear technology. Scientific inventions can be used for the benefit of mankind and to make human life comfortable and easy. But unfortunately misusing scientific inventions like nuclear technology, and telecommunications have become the reason for the fall of moral values. The programmes which are telecast on our television sets cant be watched with our families, even some cartoon shows promote violence and immorality. It conditions the mind of our youngsters on sub conscious level and this way they are often overtaken by the violent behavior. This is the reason day in and day out we witness acid attacks on girls, news of rapes every day in newspapers and much more.
Movies and television programmes and mass media plays important role to shape the character of our young generation and both Hollywood and Bollywood movies promote violence, nudity and anger. In the name of art women have been reduced to commodity and pleasure object. Hollywood has become a tool to conquer the cultures of nations. Wests claims about equal rights for women falls flat when we see their crime rate against women on rise. There is no doubt in it that the more we move away from religion and spirituality the more we move away from humanity.
Religious scholars have to play important role for the resurrection of moral and spiritual values and responsibility also falls on the shoulders of parents to educate their children about Islamic and spiritual aspects of life.
