Srinagar: Passengers in general criticized the State Transport Authority (STA) for its failure to slash the passenger fares despite considerable fall in the prices of diesel and petrol from past three months.
A delegation of passengers and respectable citizens told CNS that despite considerable fall in petrol and diesel prices from past three months, authorities did not bother to reduce the passenger fare. They urged the state Governor N.N Vohra to decrease the transport fare and provide relief to inflation-ridden masses of the region.
Its the demand of the general public who have no personal means of transport. The unjustified and illogical fare being charged is an open loot of the poor people, who travel daily by public transport. The transporters are the part of the society and they should understand their social responsibility towards society, they said.
When contacted Regional Transport Kashmir Mehmood Ahmed Shah told CNS that it is the domain of State Transport Authority that is headed by Transport Commissioner. Transport Commissioner had sought recommendations from me as well as RTOs Jammu and Kathua in this regard. After talking to transporters, civil society and consumer forum, we submitted our recommendations asking for reduction in transport fare. We expect a decision in this regard in coming days, he said.
