Srinagar: At least five houses were gutted in a fire incident at Roni Mohalla Kalan, in the interiors of Dal Lake on Saturday.
The massive blaze rendered 14 families homeless. The families are now taking shelter in their neighbor’s houses.
Locals say that a house caught fire at around 2 p.m. and nearly half an hour it engulfed all the neighboring structures.
As of now the reason behind the massive blaze remains unknown but family people say short circuit might be the reason.
The locals accused the administration of not doing much to help the fire victims.
Tasaduq Hussain who lives in the vicinity said many local youth suffered injuries and one youth was operated on as he suffered burns.
“The men from the Fire and Emergency Services Department did not reach locality on time and it was because of local youth, they were able to douse the flames” Tasaduq said.
One among the injured was Shubeena Mohiudeen, an orphan who was planning to get married next month.
Shubeena suffered burn injuries as she tried to save her belongings, especially her jewelry.
Around one hundred pigeons were also charred to death in the fire incident.
Locals alleged the administration did not offer relief to the victims and appealed to higher authorities to come to their rescue.
It is pertinent to mention, earlier, five residential houses were reduced to ashes on 18th May. Locals had rushed to the spot to control the fire and stopped it from spreading to other houses at Lati Mohalla inside the lake.
In view of the rising fire incidents, The J&K administration recently ordered a fire safety audit of all the government buildings “immediately”.
“It is hereby ordered that the Director General, Fire and Emergency Service shall carry out a fire safety audit of all government buildings in the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir immediately,” reads a government order.
“All the concerned Administrative Secretaries shall take immediate corrective action in light of the Fire Safety Audit Reports so furnished to them for preventing occurrence of fire incidents in all buildings of their Departments,” the order added.
