Srinagar- A day after three militants, including Hizbul Mujahideen top commander were killed in an encounter, unidentified militants on Saturday shot dead a policeman in Zoonimar area of this capital city.
Constable Ghulam Hassan Dar, working as a driver in the newly introduced Emergency Response Support System (ERSS), was on way to his office when militants fired upon him near Aiwa Bridge along the busy Dr Ali Jan road, a police official said.
A resident of Danawari locality of Eidgah, Dar sustained multiple injuries in the broad daylight attack by militants. He was rushed to the nearby SK institute of medical sciences (SKIMS) for treatment.
“The policeman had received multiple firearm injuries in his head and shoulder. He was operated and shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital. However, in the evening, he succumbed to his injuries,” SKIMS Medical Superintendent, Dr Farooq Jan told Kashmir Observer.
Dar, he said, had suffered blood loss due to the severe head injuries.
ERSS 112, a pan-India integrated single emergency helpline number for various emergency services such as Police, Fire & Emergency Services, Medical Services, Social Welfare and Disaster Management was launched by police in February this year.
The emergency number 112 aims to provide 24×7 emergency responses and immediate assistance to the callers in distress and also has a special desk for assistance of women in distress.
A close relative told journalists at the shootout spot that Dar was not engaged in anti-militancy operations and he has never held a gun in his hand.
“He would leave for duty at 7 in the morning and return in the evening. He is simply a driver in the police department. He has never harassed or caused inconvenience to anyone,” he said.
Police sources told Kashmir Observer that Dar was followed by two bike-borne militants as soon as he left his home for duties from his residence.
“As soon as he reached Aiwa Bridge, one of the bike-borne militants took out his pistol and fired several rounds at Dar from point blank range,” they said.
They said that Dar, who was in civvies, collapsed on the ground in a pool of blood.
“Even his helmet was blood soaked,” they said, adding that police have collected some footage around the area to identify and track down the militants responsible for the attack
The attack on the policeman in Srinagar comes a day after three Hizb militants; including the outfit’s longest surviving militant Ashiq Molvi, was killed in an overnight encounter with government forces near the popular tourist resort of Pahalgam in South Kashmir on Friday.
Soldier Shoots Self Dead In Jammu
An Army man allegedly ended his life by shooting himself dead with his service rifle inside a camp here on Saturday, officials said.
The soldier, a resident of Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, was on sentry duty at Jourian camp on the outskirts of Jammu when he shot himself in the head, they said.
The officials said the sepoy died instantly and later his body was shifted to Government Medical College (GMC) hospital by a police party for post-mortem.
The motive behind his taking the extreme step was not known immediately.
Misfire Injures Policeman In Budgam
A police constable was injured on Saturday after his rifle accidentally went off in Khag area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district.
Constable Muzaffar Ahmad sustained gunshot injuries in his left foot when his service weapon accidentally went off during naka duty near block office Khag on Saturday afternoon, reports said.
The injured policeman was removed by his colleagues to the SKIMS, Bemina hospital for treatment. His condition is said to be stable, reports said.
