SRINAGAR: Army has launched massive search operation in several areas of north Kashmirs Kupwara district.
Official sources said that armys 18 RR and 9 PARA launched searches at Poshlutu and Dardpora forests following the information about the presence of militants in the area since Sunday morning.
Pertinently, the searches were launched in backdrop of the arrest of Muawiya, a Lashkar-e-Taiba commander from Pakistan who was apprehended by forces last week in Choora, Sopore from the house of Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) leader Farooq Ahmad Bhat, who is also a Sarpanch and had unsuccessfully contested recent Assembly polls from Sangrama constituency, sources said.
They said the arrest of LeT commander would help in cracking the militant network in the region.
He disclosed before the investigating team that at least 20 militants might have infiltrated in this side since September 8, source said.
Top sources said that the LeT commander, whose real name is Zubair Ahmad Mughal alias Muawiya alias Akhtar Hussain, resident of Gulshan Iqbal in Karachi city of Sindh province, had infiltrated into Kashmir on September 8 last year when Kashmir was hit by floods along with his two associates Abu Jabir and Abu Sufyan from Bilal Point in Teetwal area of the district. Both of the associates have been killed in separate encounters.
