Srinagar- Unidentified militants on Monday shot dead a Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel and injured another in an audacious attack in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
Around 6:00pm Monday, unknown militants opened gunfire upon two RPF personnel, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Devraj Kumar and Head Constable Surinder Kumar outside the Kakapora railway station in the south Kashmir district, officials said.
In the surprise militant attack, both the RPF personnel sustained grievous injuries. They were removed to the nearby hospital for treatment. However, the Head Constable Surinder Kumar succumbed to his injuries, officials said.
According to the officials, the two RPF personnel had gone out to a tea stall when unknown militants fired indiscriminately upon them.
Soon after the incident, police and army reached the shootout spot and launched a search operation to nab the attackers.
Meanwhile, police has registered a case under relevant sections of law and initiated investigation.
“Officers continue to work to establish the full circumstances of the terror crime while the whole area has been cordoned off with the help of reinforcement and search in the area is going on,” a police spokesperson said.
Kumar’s killing comes two days after a soldier was killed in an encounter with militants in Watnar area of Kokernag in the neighbouring Anantnag district on April 16.
A day earlier on April 15, unidentified militants shot dead Manzoor Ahmad Bangroo, an independent Sarpanch in an orchard in his native Goshbug village of Pattan in Baramulla district.
