Srinagar- A Pakistani militant killed in an encounter with government forces in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Monday, was active for the last five years in south Kashmir and had a long history of cases, police said Tuesday.
Jameel Pasha alias Usman Chacha of Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) and his associate —Sameer Ahmad Sofi of Amshipora, Shopian, a hybrid militant were killed in Khurbatpora area of Kulgam on Monday.
According to the police spokesperson, Pasha was active since 5 years in Kulgam-Shopian belt and had a history of “terror crime cases” including attacks on police and security forces, abduction of forces personnel, IED attacks, weapon looting and “civilian atrocities”.
The Pakistani militant, he said, was also instrumental in recruitment of gullible youth into “terror folds”.
The police spokesperson further said that Pasha and Sofi were part of the group that escaped after a brief gunfight in Chaki Samad area of the district on Saturday last.
Giving details of the operation, he said that a joint team of police and army was constituted on the basis of specific input about the movement of militants in a vehicle on Manzgam-Aharbal axis.
“At about 1750hrs, a three-wheeler vehicle (Tempo) was spotted near Khur-Batpora moving in suspicious conditions which was chased and challenged,” he said.
However, the spokesperson said that the militants travelling in the suspected vehicle jumped out and resorted to indiscriminate firing towards the joint team of forces. The militants’ fire, he said, was retaliated effectively leading to an encounter.
“In the initial exchange of fire two police personnel got critically injured and were evacuated amidst the heavy firing and air lifted to Army’s Base Hospital Srinagar where their condition is stable now,” he said.
In the ensuing encounter, the police spokesperson said Pasha and an alleged Hybrid militant were killed.
“Incriminating materials, arms & ammunition including 01 AK47 rifle, 03 AK47 Magazine, 36 AK 47 rounds, 01 Pistol, 01 Pistol Magazine, 05 Pistol rounds, 01 Grenade catch 86P, 01 BP Pouch and 01 weapon Oil Bottle have been recovered,” he said.
All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation and to probe their complicity in other terror crimes. Also the vehicle used in commission of crime has been seized,” he added.
In this connection, the spokesperson said a Case vide FIR No 09/2022 under relevant sections of law stands registered at Police Station Manzgam and investigation has been initiated.
“People are requested to cooperate with Police till the area at the encounter site is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials, if any,” he added.
The spokesperson also quoted IGP appreciating the joint team for conducting a successful operation which led to elimination of most wanted Pakistani militant.
