JAMMU- The Jammu and Kashmir government has decided to hike the emoluments of the legislators by Rs 10,000 each, fulfilling their long-pending demand for a better pay package.
This was announced by Minister for Finance and Planning Development Muzaffar Hussain Baig in the legislative assembly on Friday while replying to the debate on budget proposals 2005-06.
Justifying the hike in the emoluments of the legislators, the Minister said the government wants to encourage educated and honest people to come to the legislature and this can be done only through offering them better perks.
He said the expectations of the people with their representatives are growing everyday and it is very difficult for the legislators to reach out to the masses with limited resources at their disposal.
“Although it is a difficult decision which could evoke public criticism, the government has to take care of the lawmakers who are at present drawing a meagre salary of Rs 4000 in addition to paltry allowances,” he said.”
