Jammu – The J&K State Council for Science & Technology Jammu, in collaboration with Department of Wildlife Protection Jammu organized a visit of students from Government Women College Gandhi Nagar and Government Women College Parade Jammu to Manda Zoo Park, as part of the wildlife week celebrations.
A group of 120 students from the two colleges along with faculty members were taken to the zoo and apprised about the numerous animal species being nourished at the park by the wildlife department
The students too keen interest in the wild life kept in the zoo, which include python, leopard, black bear, porcupine, spotted deer, barking deer, Blue bull, goral, jungle cat, civet cat, pea fowl, emu etc
The objective of this visit was to educate students about the wildlife of Jammu region and inculcate among them a sense of responsibility towards conservation of the endangered faunal species. The students had a round of all animal enclosures and watched wild animals and learnt about their behaviour, conservation status, feeding habits, their up keep and maintenance and health care.
Wildlife officials interacted with the students and answered their queries regarding wildlife management during the visit.
Tahir Shawl Wildlife Warden Jammu spoke about the importance of exposing students to the native flora and fauna and importance of conservation breeding programmes. He said that many species of wild animals like hangul, black-necked crane, Snow leopard and Tibetan antelope (chiru) are rare and endangered and ex-situ conservation programmes needed to be launched to preserve the gene pool of such species. He also gave an introduction about different programmes being organized during the wildlife week celebration in Jammu and importance of deer parks and zoo in dissemination of education about the conservation issues and threats to wild fauna.
Balwant Singh Range Officer Nandini highlighted the importance of conservation of bio-diversity and stressed upon the need to educate students and young generation about their nature heritage. He explained in detail the role of young generation in safeguarding the environment by adopting eco-friendly life style.
Two wildlife documentaries viz, Wildlife of Jammu &Kashmir and Monkey menace were shown to the students at Nature Interpretation Centre, Manda.
Sayeed Ahmed Range Officer Jammu, Majid Bashir Range Officer Deer Park/ Zoo Jammu and Dr Ab. Majid wildlife veterinarian conducted the visit to the deer park and interacted with the students. The representative of J&K State Council for Science & Technology Jammu & faculty members of Collages thanked wildlife department for organizing such an informative and educative programme.
