Srinagar: The fortnight-long mystery behind the acid attack on a law graduate here ended today with police claiming to have solved the case with the arrest of three persons including the main culprits.
The horrendous attack which took place on December 11 outside an educational institute at Nowshehra locality of Soura shook the entire valley prompting police to set up a special investigation team to crack the blind case.
Irshad Ahmad Wani alias Sunny of Wazir Bagh and Umar Noor Dar of Bemina along with a shopkeeper were arrested in connection with the case
which stands solved, Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, Abdul Gani Mir told reporters here.
Mir said Sunny was the main conspirator , while Umar was the executor. A shopkeeper from whom the duo had purchased the chemical was also taken into custody. The mastermind of the attack was arrested from Jammu while Omar surrendered before police under family pressure.
Giving details of the case, he said Sunny was stalking the victim for quite some time. His advances bore no results and when the girl rejected and denounced his movements, he chalked out a plan and took his friend (Umar) into confidence.
Umar helped his fiend to carry out the acid attack for petty financial gains.
Mir said both the friends were running a spare parts shop in frontier district of Kupwara and the duo a week before the attack had obtained 40 litres of distilled water as well as two litres of concentrated Sulphuric Acid from a shop in Batamaloo.
Police has also arrested the shopkeeper and he is being questioned, he said.
Sunny left him in a vengeful huff after the girl spurned him. He roped in his friend and business partner who was both sympathetic as well lured by promised financial gains.
Sunny carefully planned every step of the gruesome attack and he himself and along with his friend monitored the spot of incident beforehand at least seven different times to plan the attack, he said.
The Kashmir police chief said on the fateful day, Umar carried out this horrendous attack almost to perfection.
He borrowed the vehicle of his uncle who knew nothing of his evil intent. He left home in the vehicle at around 9:15 in the morning and after carrying out his dastardly attack returned home at around 11:30 in the afternoon.
His also burnt his right hand during acid throwing while trying to make a quick gateway. On the way back he threw the beaker with which he had thrown the acid near Achan landfill site and had his hand bandaged, Mir said adding Sunny visited Omar later the same day and cooked up a story to his family that he and the vehicle had been involved in an accident.
The vehicle used for carrying the attack was carrying the sticker MUSA not MANSA, the name of the son of the owner of the vehicle, Mir said.
He said that a case vide FIR number 136/2014 under section 326A has been registered against the culprits.
In reply to a question, Mir said it was a blind case as the victim was referred to Chennai for treatment and was unable to cooperate.
From social responsibility view, police acted swiftly and constituted nine teams to crack the case, he said.
He said the police have taken the crime against women seriously.
