RECENTLY, 12th class results were declared in Kashmir. While the usual “girls outshine boys” news flashed on our screens — there was an unexpected flow of hate directed towards some students.
Following interviews with news channels, one of the state toppers was trolled shamelessly for her choice of clothes. The comments that were present all across the web did not merely moral police her, some were open calls to threat.
It is disappointing to see that our society has some elements that are hellbent at bringing women down and discouraging them.
However, we must not be blind-sighted by the hate given how it is the same society where it is young girls who have done brilliant in exams.
People should know that they are no more than criminals, thugs and trollers when they mindlessly abuse women online or participate in an unproductive shaming enterprise directed towards a young girl. To the many, “This is not Islam” comments, I say, trolling, online abuse, online threats are certainly not Islamic.
Our women have the minds to make the best of their journeys. We must have faith in them and stand with them as they excel and go on to make great contributions in the field of education.
