Its orders cannot be questioned in any court, say officials
Srinagar- The delimitation commission’s proposals are expected to be unveiled for suggestions and objections from the general public immediately after February 14, news reports said on Tuesday.
The commission headed by former Supreme Court judge, justice (retd.) Ranjana Desai will publish its proposals for the delimitation of constituencies, together with the dissenting proposals, if any, of any associate member, immediately after the MPs will submit their suggestions/objections, KNO report said.
“The Commission has asked the MPs to submit their suggestions/ objections by February 14,” they said, adding that the panel’s proposals would be published for soliciting feedback from the public immediately after the deadline.
It is worthwhile to mention that the panel had last week shared its second report with all five MPs from Jammu & Kashmir to seek their suggestions/ objections over it.
The proposals of delimitation commission have come under criticism from regional parties with MP and NC President Dr Farooq Abdullah saying the proposal “defies any and all logic” and no political, social and administrative reason can justify the recommendations.
It is worthwhile to mention that the delimitation commission’s orders cannot be challenged in any court and have the force of law.
On March 06, 2020, the Government of India constituted the commission for delimitation of 90 assembly segments and five Lok Sabha seats. Its extended tenure is coming to an end in the first week of March.
PAGD to Hold Meet on Feb 23
The Peoples’ Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) is meanwhile all set to hold a meeting on February 23, to discuss the recent draft put forth by the Delimitation Commission.
According to sources in PAGD the grouping will meet on Feb 23 in Srinagar at its president Dr Farooq Abdullah’s Gupkar residence.
Earlier, the meeting was scheduled to be held at Jammu on Feb 13. However, the sources said that the meeting has been rescheduled and will now be held on Feb 23.
Spokesman of PAGD, Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami, confirmed the meeting on Feb 23, saying that the draft presented by Delimitation Commission will be discussed threadbare in the meeting.
“We have called a meeting on Feb 23 to discuss the draft presented by Delimitation Commission. The meeting was scheduled on Feb 13 at Jammu earlier, which has been postponed as some of the leaders were not available on the particular date, thus the meeting has now been fixed on February 23, 2022,” Tarigami said.
